From the point of view of living organisms, water is an excellent coolant, solvent, diluent, lubricant, nutrient and transport medium. Water is the basis of the existence of every ecosystem on the planet, not only marine and freshwater ecosystems. The global population has quadrupled in the last century, but changes in lifestyle mean that water consumption has increased seven times over. Human beings use more than half of the available water on the planet, mostly for agriculture, with the result that in many areas underground water sources are drying up. At the present rate of water use, population growth and climate change could lead to a global crisis.
