Euromed Postal – Natural Riches of the Mediterranean

The Karst Edge

The name Karst Edge refers to the escarpment marking the transition from the predominantly flysch terrain of Istria to the limestone landscapes of the Karst and the Čičarija/Ćićarija plateau. It is characterised by an imbricate or overthrust structure. Owing to their south-facing orientation, the cliffs of the Karst Edge are the only sites in Slovenia where certain Mediterranean plant species grow, such as the evergreen holm oak (Quercus ilex), bay laurel (Laurus nobilis) and Tommasini’s sandwort (Moehringia tommasinii).

Human habitation on the Karst Edge dates back to the distant past, with a settlement pattern adapted to natural conditions. Villages along the Karst Edge are typically located on larger thrust sheets and built in the shelter of the scarp of the next one, with farmland occupying the level ground on each sheet. The relief and geological characteristics of the Karst Edge present a challenge for the construction of transport infrastructure. Notable civil engineering projects in the area include the Črni Kal viaduct on the Primorska motorway and the second track of the Divača–Koper railway line.

Because the Karst Edge rises up above Istria, its cliffs offer magnificent views of the Adriatic, with the Alps in the background. The area is popular for hiking, cycling and free climbing. Among the natural attractions that draw visitors are the rock shelters known as the Ears of Istria.
