50 Years of the University of Maribor

The University of Maribor, Slovenia’s second-largest and second-oldest university, celebrates the 50th anniversary of its founding in 2025. Established in 1975, today it encompasses 17 faculties, a university library and several halls of residence, together creating a dynamic environment for education, research and cooperation with the local area. Its remarkable development is the fruit of the efforts of several generations of the university community as a whole, and also of notable individuals, particularly the pioneers of higher education in Maribor, who in the early phase fought determinedly for vocational and technical colleges to be granted equal status with faculties offering bachelor’s-level university programmes and secured the “right to research”, which, in the words of the University of Maribor’s first rector, Professor Vladimir Bračič, was “one of the fundamental postulates that helped the construction of a new Slovene university.”

As it celebrates its golden jubilee, the University of Maribor looks back at its rich history and, at the same time, looks with pride to the future – committed to creativity, the transfer of knowledge and international connections. The university strives for excellence, inclusion and sustainable development, with a particular emphasis on applying science to the challenges facing society.

Proud of all our achievements to date, we will continue to encourage academic excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration, global connections and academic freedom, since these are the foundations of teaching, research and artistic achievements at the highest level.
