Altroke – now also a stamp!
You won’t find the word altroke in the dictionary: it is an Istrian dialect word meaning “certainly” or “and how!” It was chosen in 2021 as the name of an excellent gastronomic festival whose full title is the Altroke Istra Gourmet Festival.
In essence, this festival consists of multiple gastronomic events in different locations, encompassing both urban and rural environments in the Slovenian part of the Istrian peninsula. These events take the form of weekly food markets from May to August and offer visitors a range of local and regional Istrian dishes and alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Stalls serve up fish and shellfish, local fuži pasta with truffles, various herb omelettes known as fritaje or frtalje, and Istrian meat products including local Istrian ham. Global street food is also represented by a selection of typical dishes. Last but not least, there are the fried doughnuts known as fritole and, of course, excellent Istrian wines and spirits and soft drinks made with natural ingredients.
The Altroke Istra Gourmet Festival builds on the experience of a major two-day gastronomic event in Koper dedicated to desserts called Sladka Istra (Sweet Istria).
