XXV Winter Olympic Games – Milano Cortina 2026
It has been a long time since the Winter Olympic Games were held so close to home for sports fans in Slovenia, with the world’s biggest sporting event returning to Cortina d’Ampezzo after an absence of exactly 70 years. This will be the fourth time that Italy has hosted the Games in the history of the modern Olympics: after Cortina d’Ampezzo in 1956, the Winter Games were held in Turin in 2006, while Rome hosted the Summer Games in 1960. The Olympic spirit is thus returning to Slovenia’s immediate neighbourhood.
The XXV Winter Olympic Games will take place from 6 to 22 February 2026 in Milan, Cortina d’Ampezzo and other venues in the Valtellina and Val di Fiemme. A total of 2,900 athletes from 90 countries will compete in 16 sports. For the first time, ski mountaineering will be included in the Olympic programme, alongside ice hockey, figure skating, speed skating, short track speed skating, snowboarding, freestyle skiing, alpine skiing, curling, luge, bobsleigh, skeleton, biathlon, cross-country skiing, ski jumping and Nordic combined.
Among Slovene fans there is keen interest in the ski jumping events, which will take place in Predazzo. Women’s alpine skiing will be held in Cortina d’Ampezzo, men’s alpine skiing in Bormio, snowboarding and freestyle skiing in Livigno, the biathlon events in Anterselva/Antholz, and the cross-country skiing events in Tesero.
