SPORT – SLOVENIA’S OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALS
ANDREJA LEŠKI – queen of the Paris tatami mats maintains Slovenia’s judo dominance at the Olympic Games
Judo is the sport in which Slovenia has won the most Olympic medals in its independent sports history. The trail was blazed in 2004 at the Athens Olympics by Urška Žolnir winning bronze, followed by Lucija Polavder, Tina Trstenjak and Anamari Velenšek, and in Paris Andreja Leški got her name written in gold lettering. The 27 year-old from Koper overcame local girl Clarisse Agbegnenou in the French capital, silencing the packed arena and leaving the tatami with a gold medal. In this way she continued the 20-year tradition of Slovene Olympic distinction in judo. To her two bronze medals and one gold from the European championships and two silvers from the world championships she added an Olympic medal of the noblest lustre, along with the title reserved only for the best – Olympic champion.
