The mountain hare (Lepus timidus) is found across a large part of Alpine and Prealpine Slovenia. This is also the far south-eastern extremity of its distribution in central Europe. The mountain hare is well adapted to the environment in which it lives, with its brownish-grey summer fur changing to snow-white in winter. Only the black tips of its ears give it away throughout the year. The mountain hare is most commonly found in mountain pastures and forest meadows, on high moors and amid dwarf pines. In winter it is also found in mountain and highland areas.
