40^th Piran Days of Architecture

Piran Days of Architecture (PDA) is the name of an international architectural conference that is one of the longest-established events of its kind anywhere in the world. It has been taking place since 1983, always in late November, either at the Tartini Theatre in the medieval town of Piran or at the Portorož Auditorium. Countless world-renowned architects have spoken at the conference, including many who have gone on to win prestigious international awards such as the Pritzker Architecture Prize, the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture (Mies van der Rohe Award) or the Golden Lion at the Venice Architecture Biennale. The purpose of the conference is to assess the current state of architecture and society and present the most innovative ideas in contemporary architecture and spatial planning that, with an understanding of and respect for geographical and cultural context, succeed in preserving cultural identity and cultural diversity.

Since 1989 the PDA conference has also included the presentation of the prestigious international Piranesi Awards, named after the eighteenth-century Italian artist Giovanni Battisti Piranesi (1720–1778), whose family is believed to have roots in Piran. Awards go to the best architectural creations of the last two years in the countries of central Europe and to the best projects submitted by architecture students at European universities.
