Three decades of a true festival of running: the NLB 30th Ljubljana Marathon is almost here

Slovenia’s biggest running event celebrates a major milestone this year. Over the past three decades the NLB Ljubljana Marathon has grown far beyond its original scope to become one of the best-known sporting symbols of both Ljubljana and Slovenia.

Since its inaugural edition in 1996 the marathon has developed into an internationally recognised event, drawing top athletes, thousands of recreational runners and crowds of supporters from Slovenia and abroad to the Slovenian capital every autumn. Its dynamic course, winding through the city’s vibrant streets and past its most iconic landmarks, offers participants a unique sporting experience in the very heart of Ljubljana.

Today the NLB Ljubljana Marathon is much more than a sporting competition in which more than 30,000 runners put themselves to the test. It is a celebration of physical activity, perseverance and healthy living, bringing together people of all generations, occupations and nationalities year after year. To encourage the broadest possible participation, the programme has traditionally included a half marathon and a 10 km race alongside the classic marathon distance, while the running weekend is further enriched by hugely popular races for children and schools. The 30th edition of the marathon confirms its importance and further strengthens Ljubljana’s reputation and profile as a city of healthy, active living.

On 17 and 18 October 2026 the NLB 30th Ljubljana Marathon will once again bring together the city, runners and supporters for an unforgettable festival of sport.
