Slovenia in Superlatives:

Oldest pharmacy, Olimje

As part of our Tourism series, we are embarking on a presentation of some of the most extraordinary examples of Slovenia’s natural and cultural landscape, cultural heritage, sporting achievements and contemporary creativity, all of which are covered by the concept Slovenia in Superlatives. This is, in fact, a literal translation of the title of the best-selling book published by the noted Slovene photographer and writer Tomo Jeseničnik in 2008. The book has also been translated into English as Extraordinary Slovenia.

The first “superlative” of Slovenia to be presented on a Pošta Slovenije postage stamp is the oldest pharmacy in Slovenia, which also happens to be the third oldest in Europe: only Paris and Dubrovnik can boast an older one. The pharmacy is located on the ground floor of the left-hand tower of the former castle that in 1663 became a monastery of the Pauline Fathers, who moved to Olimje from Lepoglava in Croatia. In addition to their pastoral work and their activities as builders, the monks occupied themselves with pharmacology and, in particular, herbalism. The furnishings and equipment of the pharmacy have not survived, with the exception of the frescoes painted in 1780 by Anton Lerchinger of Rogatec. These consist of biblical scenes and depictions of famous physicians, from Aesculapius to Paracelsus. Two frescoes by the entrance show the patron saints of physicians, Saints Cosmas and Damian. The Pauline Fathers were expelled from Olimje by Emperor Joseph II in 1782.

After the Second World War, the monastery was nationalised and the premises of the former pharmacy were used to store crops. Since 1990 the building has been home to a community of Minorite friars, who have revived the herbalist tradition. The oldest pharmacy, monastery and church are today a popular tourist attraction, with many visitors also taking the opportunity to buy herbal preparations. The Minorites have also laid out a garden with paths for visitors to stroll on and beds where between 200 and 250 species of medicinal plants now grow.
