Sport – Golden Olympians

Golden Girl Urša

The Slovenian ski jumper Urša Bogataj wrote an incredible success story at the Winter Olympics in Beijing, winning two gold medals and becoming only the second Slovenian athlete to achieve this feat at a Winter Olympic Games (the first being the alpine skier Tina Maze in 2014).

Urša won her first gold on the first day of competition at the Beijing Games, in the women’s normal hill individual event. Second after the first round, she put on an impressive display in the final round and deservedly took gold. Her success was all the greater given that at the time she was yet to score an individual win in a World Cup event in over ten years of competing.

Her success was complemented by Nika Križnar’s bronze medal in the same event. This was another historic Olympic achievement for Slovenia, since it was the first time that two Slovenian competitors had stood on the podium at the same event. Both women later contributed to a new historic event, as members of the Slovenian team that took gold in the inaugural mixed team normal hill competition.

Team success for Slovenia’s ski jumpers

Slovenia’s ski jumpers wrote a new page of Olympic history at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games, when for the first time the Olympic programme included a ski jumping competition for mixed teams, consisting of two women and two men from each country. Slovenia won the gold medal with a masterful performance, leaving their closest competitors an incredible 111.2 points behind. Converted into distance jumped, this would mean that they outjumped them by 222.4 metres.

Alternating by gender, the competitors took it in turns to climb to the top of the beautiful ski jumping hill (nicknamed “Snow Ruyi”) in Zhangjiakou. Slovenia’s colours were carried in turn by Nika Križnar, Timi Zajc, Urša Bogataj and Peter Prevc. Križnar’s opening jump, of 101 metres (on a hill with a K-point, representing the average jump, of 95 metres), was by far the longest. It put Slovenia solidly in first place, where they comfortably remained for the seven jumps that followed.

The team events continued in the last week of the Games with the men’s large hill team competition. Slovenia were aiming for the top spot throughout and were even leading ahead of the last jump, although in the end they had to be content with the silver medal. The team – in which Peter Prevc and Timi Zajc were joined by Cene Prevc and Lovro Kos – were almost as delighted with this achievement as they would have been to become Olympic champions.
