Flora – Gentians of Slovenia
Yellow gentian (Gentiana lutea symphyandra)
This tall perennial with yellow flowers differs from our usual idea of gentians, which we always imagine to have blue flowers. Blue flowers even appear on the labels of bottles of gentian schnapps, despite the fact that it is actually the root of the yellow gentian that is used to make this spirit, known for its bitter flavour and used in folk medicine to treat stomach problems.
As a consequence of its roots being dug up to make schnapps, the yellow gentian became endangered and was later placed on the protected list. Its axillary inflorescences contain numerous yellow flowers with prominent petals that are typically dark-spotted and have well-developed anthers. This last characteristic is what distinguishes the yellow gentian from other similar species of yellow-flowered gentians.
